Solution Lab Rur Erft
Knowledge transfer to manage extreme water events
A project of the Helmholtz Water Initiative

First SLRE Stakeholder Workshop, Bergheim
The Erftverband hosted the first SLRE Stakeholder Workshop in Bergheim on 29 September: 25 participants, 12 from the partner centres FZJ, GFZ/RIFS, KIT and UFZ and 13 from water boards, state agencies, agriculture and municipalities. Small groups tried the demonstrator, then three parallel storyline groups worked the same five guiding questions on drought and groundwater, drought and agriculture, and flood. The synthesis of the day is with the participants for comment, and version 1.0 of the drought and flood demonstrators follows in the cloud.
Three parts, one lab
SLRE is built around three parts: the Digital Twin, co-designed Storylines, and the Interactive Solution Room. The Digital Twin provides the technical foundation by connecting models, data, emulators, databases, and visualizations. The co-designed Storylines ensure that the questions, priorities, and experience of stakeholders shape what is explored. The Interactive Solution Room is the shared space where these elements come together for exchange, interaction, and joint interpretation of results, with AI agents carrying the conversation between the people in the room and the models. In this sense, SLRE follows a Transfer-by-Design approach: knowledge transfer is built into the project from the start.
- Digital Twin Models, data, emulators, databases and visualizations, connected.
- Storylines Questions, priorities and experience of stakeholders shape what is explored.
- Interactive Solution Room Where the parts come together for exchange, interaction and joint interpretation, with AI agents carrying the conversation.
Partners
SLRE is part of the Helmholtz Water Initiative and is run jointly by four Helmholtz research centres and stakeholders across the Rur–Erft region.
